What's Growing
Species of interest that came with the farm
-Maple Trees- We tap about 45 trees and put up a small sugar house in the summer of 2025. We definitely have room to expand, you can enjoy a ride, run or walk through the areas we have opened up to sugaring. We have Maple syrup for members and for sale. We have a Jug reuse program and drop of at our shop on Hudson Street.
-Basswood trees
-Apple trees- We have been working hard starting in the winter of 2026 to prune these wonderful old trees, the process with take multiple years to get them in good shape. With access to sun, the trees will rapidly grow new branches, leaves and hopefully fruit. varieties are unknown but based on last year's trees that bore fruit we have a nice selection reds and greens. Get to know your favorite trees.
-Nannyberry Bushes- When we grew sunflowers birds would perch on the hedgerow in between snacks, dropping seeds and in that process we believe they planted a long strip of these bushes, that are rip in the fall. They are edible and have a banana flavor, but also have a seed in each berry.
-Hickory trees
-Butternut trees- Scattered around the woods to the west of the sugar house are Butternut trees, some areas to the Northwest are abundant with them. Butternut trees are susceptible to a fungus called canker and almost all trees in Vermont are infected, but some have more resistance than others. We are in a slow process of removing the worst cases as to not further spread the disease. The butter nut roots also produce juglone acting as a natural herbicide. This limits food production near those trees, it also creates an issue with invasive species in particular bittersweet vine and Honey suckle that are tolerant of the chemical.
